A Contrastive Analysis of Chinese Culture and Western Culture in New Senior English for China(Book2)

Abstract:With the rapid development of globalization and increasingly frequent cultural exchanges between China and the West,an important purpose of English learning for Chinese students is intercultural communication.

Teachers and learners need to be aware of the cultural diversity in English textbooks and the importance of intercultural communication competence. A good set of English textbooks can not only enable students to learn language knowledge, but also to acquire a lot of cultural knowledge.

Therefore, the author chose the standard experimental textbooks of ordinary high school curriculum published by People's Education Press in 2007 as the research object of this paper. The purpose is to make a comparative analysis of the Chinese and Western cultures in the English textbooks for senior high schools.

This paper mainly studies the following three issues: First,what are the categories of Chinese and Western cultures in New Senior English for China (Book2)? Second, what is the ratio of Chinese and Western cultures in New Senior English for China (Book2)?Third, how about the distribution of Chinese and Western cultures in New Senior English for China(Book2)? Using the chart, the author has counted out the Chinese and Western cultures involved in book2, and sorted them out.

At the end of this paper, the author reflects on the problems and limitationsof this study, and puts forward corresponding suggestions for future research.
