ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the differences in the concept of life anddeath from the perspective of Chinese and Japanese classic films. The first film is To Live directed by Zhang Yimou, which reflects the fate of a generation of Chinesepeople through the bumpy life experiences of the hero Fugui against the background of China’s civil war and various political movements after the founding of the people’s Republic of China. The protagonist Fugui experiences reunion, parting and death all his life, and continues to live with regret, loneliness and longing for life at the end of this long life. What this film conveys to us is the unyielding struggle for death and the strong desire for the value of life. The second film, Okuribito directed by Yojiro Sada,is mainly about the life of the Japanese undertaker, observing all kinds of deaths from the perspective of a novice undertaker and gazing at the stories of loving people around the dead. After becoming an undertaker, the protagonist Kobayashi slowly changed from his initial fear of death to his awe and love for the job. This film conveys to us respect for the value of life and awe and respect for death. Taking the stories of to live and Okuribito as the starting point, this paper explores the differences in the views of life and deathbetween China and Japan from the point of view of the plot and the mental process of the protagonist, and further expounds the reasons for these differences. This paper hopes to provide reference and help for an in-depth understandingof the differences in the concept of life and death between China and Japan.

This paper is divided into three parts. As an introduction, the first part expounds the research significance and significance of this paper, as well as a brief introduction to the two films. The second part of this paper is divided into two chapters. The first chapter is the comparative exploration of the concept of life and death, which finds the similarities and differences about the attitudesbetween life and death from the events about life and death in the story. Finally, it will make a comparative exploration from the protagonist’s mental process as a clue. The second chapter explores the reasons for the differences between Chinese and Japanese views on life and death from the perspectives of religion and family concepts.

The third part is the conclusion, which summarizes the theme and significance of the thesis,in order to further deepen the understanding of the differences in the concept of life and death between China and Japan, and advocate that people should have a correct and healthy concept of life and death.
