汉英十二生肖动物隐喻的对比研究 A Comparative Study of Zodiac Animal Metaphors between Chinese and English Abstract: As a ubiquitous language phenomenon, metaphor has been of great concerns by Chinese and overseas scholars. In 1980, Lakoff proposed “Conceptual Metaphor Theory” for the first time in the book “Metaphors We Live By”, which officially symbolized that he metaphor study entered the cognitive linguistic field. Animal metaphors belong to ontological metaphor in conceptual metaphor, which largely exist in all languages. In view of that the animal words is quite a large group, this paper selected Chinese zodiac as the research object, which is very representative of Chinese animal words. Metaphor and culture are inseparable. Metaphor’s cultural features both have omogeneity and otherness, which makes the Zodiac animal metaphors in different language have both similarities and differences. This paper compares the metaphors of Zodiac in Chinese and English from three aspects: “the same image, similar figurative meaning”, “the different image, similar figurative meaning”and “the same image, different figurative meaning”. Then analyzes the causes of similarities and differences from those aspects: the sharing of animal characteristics; the similarity of human beings in material basis, physiological basis, cognitive process; and the influences of natural environment, historical allusion and religious custom.
