The Influence of Cultural Differences

Between High-context and Low-context on Chinese-English Translation of Idioms:

A Case Study of The Dream of Red Mansions

Abstract

Our country has its long history, the Chinese culture is really broad and profound. With the development of integration and globalization of culture, culture exchanges in countries around the world have become broader, which poses higher challenges to the quality, quantity and efficiency of translation of works. As one of the Great Classical Novels of Chinese,The Dream of Red Mansions gathers the essence of Chinese culture, and idioms are the great point of it. The study on the English translation of The Dream of Red Mansions has always been a popular topic in the translation industry. On the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the English translation of idioms in Hawkes's translation, this paper attempts to research the application of the two translationmethods of The Dream of Red Mansions, namely, domestication and foreignization under the influence of cultural differences between high and low contexts, and how to promote the target readers to deepen their understanding of the source language culture.
This article is a case study of idioms, which is frequently appear in Hawkes's translation. The main purpose of this thesis is to research the English translation of idioms to promote exchanges about culture and share the excellent Chinese culture, which has a high reference value, so as to provide reference for the translation of other masterpieces. The idiom corpus selected in this article are all from the Hawkes version ofThe Dream of Red Mansion(Hawkes, 1973)published by Doubleday Company.
I will start from the perspective of high and low context, using qualitative analysis and other research methods to analyze different strategies in idiom translation. The first chapter is a general introduction of the paper, including the background, the purpose and the significance of the research, and the literature review and the overall structure of the article; the second chapter is an introduction to the high and low context and translation strategies; the third chapter is a case study of idioms in The Dream of Red Mansions; the last chapter is the conclusion.
Through analysis, this article believes that when translating high-context source language, or facing readers in low-context,we should use the domestication method to output the content as much as possible. For translators, it is necessary to be familiar with the context of the source text and the context of the target language. For different readers, choose different translation methods to convey the meaning of the original text to the greatest possible extent.
