Focusing on liberal feminism, this paper analyzes different images of females and males in termsof their acceptance or rejection of liberal feminism reflected in Wives and Daughters, and reveals that female writers influenced by Victorian culture not only cater to patriarchy conservatively in their writings, but also use various forms to revolt against patriarchal oppression, outlining the difficult development of liberal feminism of that historical period under patriarchal oppression. This paper concludes that inspired by liberal feminism of that era, many females oppressed by patriarchy, like the heroine Molly Gibson, rejected the identity of “The Angle in the House” imposed on them and bravely pursued gender equality and freedom.
