| A Brief Study on Black Humor in Catch-22 Abstract: Joseph Heller is one of the most well-known writers in contemporaryAmerican literature and also the typical representative writer of black humor. Black humor is an important modern literary school andexpresses the absurdity and chaos of the modern world. Catch-22, published in 1961,is not only the most successful work of Heller, but also one of the most popular novels in the United States after WWII. And it highlights this approach and reveals some common problemsin Western societies with cruelty and absurdity of the war. This thesis mainly focuses on the study of black humor in Catch-22 and is divided into five parts.In the first two chapters,it briefly introduces the life experience of Joseph Heller, the novel Catch-22 and the literature review. Chapter three explains the origin,development and artistic features of black humor theory and also the significance of the usage of black humor. From the perspective of characters, themes,structure and language features of this novel, chapter four discusses the application of black humor in Catch-22. From these absurd characters,fragmented structure and illogical language, we can see the absurdity, injustice and chaos of the society. The last is the conclusion, which concludes the thesis main content,explains the methods and discusses the disadvantages of the thesis.
