| An Analysis of the Love Theme of A Farewell to Arms [Abstract] A Farewell to Arms, one of the best novels of Hemingway,tells the love tragedy of the hero and heroine, Henry and Catherine, against the background of World War I. With the first person narrative technique and the concise language,Hemingway shows us the cruel reality of life and the devastation of human love in the war. It is a plangent love story with the theme of love and war.This paper will deeply analyze the different stages of the love process between Henry and Catherine in the war- friendship, romantic love, companionate love,consummate love and their final tragic love, which manifests that people’s desire for a happy life would be finally destroyed by the war. And this paper will also try to reveal the love theme by analyzing threeaspects of the development of the plot, characters,writing style to express the disillusionment of beautiful love and life for the couple in the war.
