Abstract


Grammar gains its prominence in language teaching, particularly in English as a foreign language (EFL) and English as a second language (ESL). However, most students in secondary vocational school are tired of grammar lessons and take no interests in grammar. In the past few years, more and more educators start to propose that the teacher should regard learners as the subjects in class and should try to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability. With development of education informationization, the online grammar teaching is supposed to be one of the best forms to implement the reform of secondary vocational school English grammar teaching and learning.
This paper tries to explore the teaching effects of online English grammar teaching in secondary vocational school. A total of 96 subjects enrolled in the study are all Grade One students, majoring in Pharmacy in a secondary vocational school in Zhaoqing. They are from two classes (48 in each), with one experimental group being taught English grammar through online teaching platform and one control group being taught English grammar through traditional grammar teaching method. The pre- and post- language test, pre- and post- questionnaire, interview are used to collect the data and then the SPSS 17.0 is used to analyze the data. The study tries to answer the following three questions:
1. Is online grammar teaching more facilitative in promoting students’ grammar level than the traditional grammar teaching approaches?
2. Can students’ English autonomous learning ability be improved through online grammar teaching?
3. What is secondary vocational school students’ attitude towards online grammar teaching?
Through the analysis of the empirical study, the author draws the following conclusions: The experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in the posttest and in three of the five quizzes. It was found that students’ grammar level in the experimental group improved more than that of students in the control group, especially significant in grammatical items such as prepositions, prepositional phrases, subject-verb agreement and phrasal verbs. Online grammar teaching was also found to be effective in enhancing students’ English autonomous learning, and the specific performance can be shown in the following: students’ English learning interest improved and they had correct learning motivation; most of them can set English learning goals and plans; they can monitor their own learning process in most parts of their studies; the consciousness of evaluating their learning process and learning result increased too. Furthermore, the majority of subjects in the experimental group held a favorable attitude towards online grammar teaching.
