The background of the story is in Cuba in the middle of the 20th century. The protagonist is an old fisherman named Santiago, supporting is a child named Mandolin. The old fisherman did not catch fish for 84 days, but he refused to give up, and he was full of the spirit of struggle, finally in the 85th day to catch a length of 18 feet, 1500 pounds of big marlin.
