Symbolism of The Old Man and the Sea

Abstract

This novel is based on a real story. It was written by Hemingway. Western European symbolism is a genre of world literary works. Hemingway's "The Old Man and the sea” contains a profound ideological theme symbolic significance.
He was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. He was a part of the 1920s expatriate community in Paris, as well as the veterans of World War One later known as "the Lost Generation", as described in his posthumous memoir A Moveable Feast. This novel describes Hemingway moved to Cuba and met the old fisherman Gregorio Fontes. This novel based on the symbolic writing style.
The background of the story is in Cuba in the middle of the 20th century. The protagonist is an old fisherman named Santiago, supporting is a child named Mandolin. The old fisherman did not catch fish for 84 days, but he refused to give up, and he was full of the spirit of struggle, finally in the 85th day to catch a length of 18 feet, 1500 pounds of big marlin.
Finally, I draw a conclusion that Hemingway's doctrine of Courage, Hemingway's hero and his perseverance in the face of difficulties. To tell the truth: "Man is not born defeated." Man can be destroyed but cannot be defeated. The miserable fate of the old fisherman is precisely the reflection of Hemingway's own experience in art.
