A Study on Sandra Cisneros’ Feminist Thought in The House on Mango Street

ABSTRACT

This thesis studies Sandra Cisneros’ Feminist Thought in The House on Mango Street. By writing The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros looked back on her childhood and narrated her psychological growth experience from a little naive girl to a mature female writer, who writes for her community and writes for female rights and male and female equality. In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros depicted herself as the female protagonist Esperanza, described her childhood experience in Mango Street, and represented strong feminist thoughts that fight against patriarchal society and pursue female rights and freedom. Since the female characters Cisneros described in her book had great influence on Cisneros’ growth experience and the form of her feminist thoughts, this essay will focus on the analysis of the female characters in The House on Mango Street, who were oppressed and fettered both physically and psychologically in the patriarchy society, to further explore Cisneros’ feminist thoughts and the psychological process she experienced to form her feminist thoughts during growing-up.
Key words: feminism, patriarchal society, growth experience, Mexican American female characters
