A Study of the Relevance of Information Processing Theory and Vocabulary Learnin in English majors--A Case of Lesson1 in Advance English

ABSTRACT

Vocabulary plays an paramount important role in the process of language learning. In recent years, the study of vocabulary learning has drawn a great attention. As we all know, the process of second language learning is a combination process of study and acquisition. The essence of learning is that students construct their own knowledge systems through their studies and acquisitions and through continuous accepting information by assimilation and accommodation.
This paper, based on the information processing theory of Gagne, from the standpoint which could be beneficial to accept information and process effectively of students, puts forward several strategies for vocabulary learning in the three processes- vocabulary input, elaborative encoding and output. By means of literature research, case analysis method and comparative analysis, taking the first lesson of Advance English as an example, based on the information processing theory, this paper compares the effects of different learning methods and puts forward the methods of constructing vocabulary network by word association, word formation, contrast and semantics and so on, which helps students to conform to the psychological process of vocabulary learning and extraction and to construct a mental lexicon schema. By practicing, students will improve the effect of vocabulary memory and the ability of vocabulary use in their daily lives. As a matter of fact, English vocabulary learning is a process of information processing. If the word information could be processed appropriately, English majors will maximize the vocabulary quantity in the same time, expand their vocabulary knowledge, and then enhance the ability of vocabulary production and understanding.
