Abstract

David Herbert Lawrence is one of the most unique and controversial novelists of the twentieth century. His combination of social criticism and psychological analysis makes an important contribution to the development of the British psychological novel. The most important concern in Lawrence’s work is the relationship between human beings.Sons and Lovers introduces one of his most characteristic themes: the complexity of human relationships. This work is a semi-autobiographical novel in which the abnormal relationships of the miners’ family are a true portrayal of the Lawrence family’s life. Psychoanalysis, also known as depth psychology, is developed and refined by Freud.Psychoanalysis focuses on the deep psychological content of the subconscious,motivation and personality, which has a profound influence on the creation of novels. Lawrence’s works are deeply influenced by Freud’s psychoanalytic theory,so this paper intends to interpret the main characters of the works fromthe psychoanalytic perspective,pointing out the struggles of these characters in their personality structure and the use of psychological defense mechanisms. Through the analysis, people can get some experience from it,so that they can better combine psychoanalytic theory with practical life and make the relationship between people more harmonious.
