Abstract During the long history of the struggle between man and earth, humans use metaphors to explore their relationship with nature. Metaphor is associated with anthropological linguistics, but is not included in the category of cognitive science. However, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson put forward the theory of conceptual metaphor in the book The Metaphors We Live By. They believe that the conceptual system on which our thoughts and actions are based is itself based on metaphors[1]. This thesis selects dog metaphor as the research target.According to the common characteristics of dogs around the world, this thesis classifies the dog metaphors collected from English and Chinese databases into two categories, and tries to make a comparative study of the dog metaphors in English and Chinese through analyzing the similarities and differences between them. Through these analyses, we can trace back the culture, realize the different historical customs, values, ways of thinking and national characters contained in the culture, and further realize the differences and uniqueness between different cultures, so as to learn from each other better.
