On the Problems and Strategies of Tour Guide Interpretation caused by Cultural Differences from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract

With the development and prosperity of China's tourism industry in the international market, Chinese-English guide interpretation has become more and more important. Tour guide interpretation is a kind of cross-cultural communication activity.Due to regional and historical reasons,the differences between Chinese and Western values, ways of thinking,social customs, religious beliefs, humanities and history lead to the obstacles in cross-cultural communication, and the obstacles in cross-cultural communication will also affect the effect of interpretation. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to properly handlethe cultural differences between Chinese and English tour guides wheninterpreting, so as to better realize the intercultural communication. It can not only spread Chinese culture smoothly,but also improve the status of Chinese culture in the international arena. Guide interpretation is a kind of interpersonal communication activity with clear directivity, that is, the so-called purposeful. Therefore, Skopos theory is feasible for guide interpretation.Based on the theory of purpose,this paper expounds the cultural barriers in tour guide interpretation, tries to find a theory and method with practical significance to overcome this problem, and extends the theory to the corresponding application field. This paper first explains the Skopos theory and its principles from Skopos theory,then analyzes the cultural barriers in tour guides' interpretation,and on this basis puts forward some targeted translation methods to solve these obstacles.
