Comparative Study on the Translation of Chinese Menu from the Perspective of Functionalist

Abstract

With the further development of opening up and the large-scale construction of "Belt and Road," China has played an increasingly important role in the international stage, which has also attracted more attention all over the world. China not only has a long history and culture, but its cuisine culture is more and more enjoyed by people in every countries. However, language barriers have become a major obstacle for the exchange of Chinese and Western food culture. Therefore, the translation of Chinese food is an urgent need for the spread of Chinese food culture.
Based on the previous studies, this paper analyzes the application of functionalist theory in Chinese menu translation from a completely new perspective, which emphasizes the responsibility of translators in translation action, in order to avoid some misunderstandings that may arise from the application of Skopos Theory alone. Taking the menu translation of restaurants abroad as an example, this article summarizes some problems in the translation of Chinese menus by comparing the cultural differences and the name disparities between Chinese and western dishes. Under the guidance of functionalist theory, this paper puts forward a series of solutions to deal with various difficulties in Chinese menu translation. Sincerely, I hope this article can provide some references for future researches about Chinese cuisine and make a contribution to the transmission of particular Chinese food.
摘要
随着对外开放的进一步深入与“一带一路”的大规模建设,中国在国际舞台上发挥着越来越重要的作用,也越来越受到全世界的广泛关注。中国不仅历史文化悠久,中国的美食更是越来越受到世界各国人民的喜爱。然而,各国语言的不同成为了中西饮食文化交流的一大障碍,而对于中国菜的翻译更是中国饮食文化传播的迫切需求。
在结合先前研究的基础上,本文从全新的角度分析了功能主义理论在中国菜单翻译中的应用,并强调了译者在翻译行为当中的责任,以期避免单独应用目的论可能导致的一些误会与障碍。本文以海外华人餐馆的英文菜单为案例,通过对比中西方菜肴中的文化差异以及菜名差异,总结了中国菜单翻译当中的一些问题。并在翻译功能论的指引下,提出了针对中国菜单翻译中各种难点的解决方案。希望通过本文可以推动中国菜肴的翻译研究,传播中国独特的美食文化。
