Abstract: Jack Kerouac is one of the most important andinfluential writers in 20th century American literature. Unlike any other American writer of the period, Jack Kerouac's novels,with their realistic style, loose structure, and startling content,rank him among the most controversial novelists of the twentieth century. He created 18 works in his life,most of which mainly described the life state of American young people after losing their faith after World War II. The novels are full of depression, antagonistic emotions and young people's loss and hesitation.From an existentialist perspective, this paper makes a character analysis of Sal,the protagonist of On the Road, and finds the performance of the protagonist's self-contradictions. Thus, it shows that everyone enjoys complete freedom to explore the essence of his life, but in this process he must learn to take responsibility. When he truly feels the sense of responsibility,he completes the most crucial step in his growth.

自我的矛盾--解析《在路上》中的萨尔

摘要：杰克·凯鲁亚克是二十世纪美国文学史上最重要以及最有影响力的作家之一。不同于该时期其他美国作家的作品，杰克·凯鲁亚克的小说以其写实的风格、松散的结构和惊世骇俗的内容使他跻身二十世纪最有争议的小说家行列。他一生共创作了18部作品，大多数都以描写二战后美国年轻人在失去信仰后的生活状态为主，小说中充斥着苦闷的心情，对抗的情绪和年轻人的迷失与彷徨。本文从存在主义视角对《在路上》的主人公萨尔进行人物分析，发现主人公自我矛盾的表现，从而表明：每个人都享有完全的自由去探寻自己人生的本质，但是在此过程中必须要学会承担责任，当他真正感受到责任意识之时，也就完成了成长中最关键的一步。
