This thesis discusses different rhetorical functions of restrictiverelative clauses and non-restrictive relative clauses respectively,combined with the analysis of typical cases in translation practice. The author will first introduce the definition and rhetorical functions of relative clauses, and analyse differences of attributives in English and Chinese. Then the author will give a brief introduction of Newmark’s communicative translation theory and mainly talk about translating methods that have been applied,namely translating into a pre-modifier, translating into a coordinate clause,translating into an independent sentence and translating into an adverbial clause. After the analysis of the approaches to translating relative clauses with different rhetorical functions, author has a better understanding of relative clauses,which can bring some suggestions and insights for both the author and readers. Keywords: restrictive relative clause; non-restrictive clause;rhetorical functions; communicative translation; translating methods 交际翻译理论指导下英语关系分句的汉译 摘 要 本文是基于《语言进化》（The Evolution of Language）文本的翻译实践而完成的一篇论文。《语言进化》是由圣安德鲁斯大学心理学院的W.Tecumseh Fitch博士一大力作。笔者翻译了该书的第十三章和第十四章。 本论文结合翻译实践中的典型案例分析，分别探讨了限制性关系分句和非限制性关系分句的不同修辞功能。笔者将首先介绍关系分句的定义和修辞功能，并分析英汉两种语言中定语成分的不同。然后笔者将简要介绍纽马克的交际翻译理论，并讨论在翻译该文本中的关系分句时所采用的翻译方法，即译为前置定语、译为并列分句、译为合成独立句和译为状语分句。 在分析了不同修辞功能的关系分句的翻译方法后，译者对关系从句有了更深入和系统的认识，也能为日后关系分句的翻译提供一些建议和启发。 关键词：限制性关系分句；非限制性关系分句；修辞功能；交际翻译；翻译方法 |
