The Typical Characters in A Tale of Two Cities and the Interpretation of the Brilliance of Humanity in the Theme ----- A Case Study of Dr.Manette

Abstract

Charles Dickens was one of the greatest critical realism writers in Victorian England. He deeply cared about and sympathizes with the poor masses. His works mainly exposed and criticized the poverty, injustice, hypocrisy and degeneration of British society in the nineteenth century. A Tale of Two Cities is one of the representative works of Dickens' later novels, and this period is also the mature period of Dickens' creation. Both writing skills and language are full of appeal. At the same time, the light of humanity that he initially embodies in his creation is also firmer.Dickens created a series of representative characters in A Tale of Two Cities, and Dr.Manette, as a representative of the justice image in the novel, reflects the author's criticism of the dark society and his thinking and expectations for the future development of society. This thesis will mainly analyze the self-sacrifice image of Dr.Manette to explore the brilliance of humanity in his works. This thesis is mainly composed of four parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature on A Tale of Two Cities, and the second part mainly analyzes the very different living conditions of the upper class and the bottom class in A Tale of Two Cities. The third part mainly analyzes the humanity reflected by the image of Dr.Manette.The fourth part mainly analyzes the meaning of humanity's light description in A Tale of Two Cities.
