| A Systematic Review of Compliments among EFL Speakers: Past, Present, and Future Directions As compliments and compliment responses play a pivotal role in effective transculturaland intercultural interactions, they have been a popular topic of study in pragmatics. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of research on compliments and L2 compliments conducted over the past four decades. It provides a synthesis of the research conducted in this area,the theoretical frameworks,the methodologies used in different studies,including data collection and data analysis first and then summarizes key findings of compliments in the EFL speakers, and discusses the significance of these findings, and speculates the future directions of research on complimenting studies on EFL learners at last. An extensive bibliographical search on studies on this particular area yielded a database of 8 studies on EFL compliments for this systematic review. After a brief exploration of the background of compliment studies done by prominent scholars in other language, this paper also gives a definition of compliments.
