On Analysis of Carrie’s Characters in Sister Carrie from Marxist Feminism

从马克思主义女性主义视角分析《嘉莉妹妹》中嘉莉的性格

Abstract

Sister Carrie is the first novel of American writer Theodore Dreiser, which is one of the symbolic novels of American naturalism. This book tells about how a rural girl in the inferior social class to be a Broadway star and achieve her dreams in the end. By reading Sister Carrie, readers can feel Carrie’s unremitting struggle and her depression. Based on the theory of Marxist feminism, this thesis analyses Carrie’s characters with the method of interpreting the text and literature review method,mainly aiming at the economic factor, patriarchy awareness and spiritual independence. And then the conclusion is drawn, that is, economic independence, spiritual fulfillment and persistence for dream are crucial factors for the females characters’ cultivation. This thesis proves the feasibility of applying Marxist feminism to analyze characters of figures in literary works. Meanwhile, readers can have a better understanding of this novel through this thesis and learn some lessons from Sister Carrie.
