| An Analysis of Hester Prynne’s Pilgrimage in The Scarlet Letter from the Perspective of Initiation
Abstract
Key words ：the theory of initiation story; Ignorance; Immaturity; Maturity; truth and loveThe Scarlet Letter is an 1850 romantic fiction in a historical setting written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is considered to be his magnum opus which was considered classics, and has the important research value. In this paper, the author will use the theory of initiation story to analyze the development of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter. There are three phases in initiation story which can clearly show the particular details of different periods of protagonist . By this thesis, the author will divide the whole story into three sections to analyze the pilgrimage of Hester Prynne, which include three points in each section. Due to the correspondence between The Scarlet Letter and the theory of initiation, The author will study the pilgrimage of Hester Prynne’s ignorance, ordeal and maturity, and then find out the reflection of strength of female to express the brave to pursuit the truth and love. According to the theory of the initiation story ,the author found out three significant point in time of Hester Prynne’s whole development period. In the first point, the Phase of Ignorance the author will divided this period into three sections to describe Prynne’s Ignorance towards Marriage, the ignorance of love and her Inner Immaturity. It is the first time of growth in Prynne’s mind and sense of worth. The second point of Prynne’s development. The author will analyse Hester Prynne’s growth with her suffering when she wear the red “A” which was divided into three sections of Persecution, Outer Ordeals and Inner Ordeals by author. The last point ,the author will describe the Inner Maturity of Hester Prynne. And make a deeper research of Prynne’s Epiphany, Inner Development and the Final Maturity. Finaly, Hester Prynne was the new woman of that period with the strength of female who had the brave to pursuit the truth and love. The author use the theory of initiation story to search the program and maturity of Hester Prynne.
