Analysis of the cultural reconciliation and conflict between the British and the Indian in A Passage to India 

摘 要


爱德华•摩根•福斯特(1879-1970)是一位著名的文学者,他的主要研究方向就是对各个群体之间的关系进行书写,前提是在这些群体分别处于不同的文化环境中。《印度之行》这本书是他在1924年印发的一本书,这本书也被称为福斯特创作生涯中的登峰造极之作。笔者认认真真的将小说读了一遍,如同爱德华•赛义德所说的一样,“关键是英国殖民者与印度间持久的对抗”才是这本小说想要表达的主要内容。本篇论文将在对这本书进行了认真的分析阅读之后的感悟和参考了以后殖民文学批评理论,再充分结合现代的思想与观念,对《印度之行》这本书中提及的“东方主义者”和“他者”之间的发展问题加以深入分析,也就是对其怎么从对话走向了冲突,又从冲突转变为决裂了的原因加以了解。对这一问题的深入分析与探讨将大大清晰当时西方文明对印度文明的影响程度和深度,进而从另外一个角度说明了文化殖民所带来的一系列影响,进而针对这一问题找到参考方式或者是解决的策略。

Abstract

There is a literature master named Edward Morgan Foster (1879-1970),who is intersted in learning the people relationship from the different countries.A Passage to India,a book which was published in 1924, can be regarded as a culmination in his literary career. Through the careful reading of this novel, it can be found that the thesis of this novel is just as what Edward Said once commented on, “the key problem in A Passage to India is the permanent antagonizing between the England colonizers and Indians (Said,1993:201).”  With the purpose of learning carefully about  this novel in postcolonial literary criticism theories and the new perspectives to  analyze and research in the process of how the Orientalist became dialogue, then turned into conflict and ended up in rupture in the novel. This study tries to find the essential reason of the mentioned transformation, by this to know the factor of influen e brought to India civilization,such as western civilization or profound.At the same time, to find solutions to the cultural colonization in today’s society.
