Abstract

The thesis provides an analysis on the horror effect created by Edgar Allan Poe, by studying his two short stories, The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of the House of Usher. Allan Poe profoundly applied his theory “the unity of effect” to write detective and horror stories, claiming that every word and sentence should serve the effect expected in the stories. The theory contributed to a succinct and attractive writing style, which brought about strong emotions and reading satisfaction for readers. The two stories studied in the paper not only represented the successful application of Poe’s literary theory, but also his profound thinking about humanity.
