HOW to PROMOTE THE ENGLISH LEARNING INTERESTS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN RURAL AREAS IN QINGHAI Abstract With widespread attention are paid to English teaching, a great number of teachers are researching and cultivating more effective ways to teach in primary school classes, especially in rural areas. As a result of the rising numbers of stay-at-home children, teaching in primary school in the countryside is of great difficulties. There has been a great variety of shortcomings and deficiencies in the traditional English teaching mode in primary school classes over the years, in which grammar and spelling are focused while listening and speaking parts are usually ignored. During the class, it is teachers who always play the leading role to teach. As New English Curriculum points out, “The main task of the English curriculum for nine-year compulsory education is to stimulate and cultivate students’ interest and their confidence in learning the language, help them develop good learning habits and form effective learning strategies, facilitate autonomy and cooperative spirit in learning.” Stimulating and cultivating students’ interest and their confidence in learning the language is put as the top priority in the English curriculum. Furthermore, interest is a direct motivation to push students’ studies, which helps students concentrate on what they are learning and think actively. This thesis discusses that teachers who teach in primary school in rural areas should not only spare no efforts to improve students’ interests, but also focus on students’ motivation and learning ability by changing the teacher’s role in class. In addition, primary school students are having a long way to go in English learning, if they are interested in English with the help of their English teachers, they can really enhance their learning efficiency and benefit all life long.
