名利场中的女性形象与萨克雷的男权思想

Abstract

William• Makepeace• Thackeray is one of the prominent writers of realism in 19th century. Vanity Fair can be considered as his representative work. In this novel, Thackeray creates two contrasting women images (Victorian “Angel in the House” and Victorian “Rebel”).Through depicting the lifetime of the two women images, Thackeray focuses on women’s position at that time and satires the money-oriented and man-dominated Victorian society.
The thesis tends to analyze the two women images and tries to understand Thackeray’s attitude from details. In the novel, Thackeray presents enormous concern about the two women images. Through different depiction he focuses on the women’s position and reflects women’s condition at that time.
What’s more, although Thackeray both praises and criticizes Amelia and Becky, as a tradition male writer, he cannot avoid being influenced by conventional Victorian values and patriarchal ideology. Therefore, even if he shows sympathy towards women, his attitude towards the two women images contains praise and criticism. For example, he shows more appreciation to Amelia--who conforms to the Victorian values. On the contrary, for Becky, who is brave、perseverant, and dare to challenge patriarchal ideology, Thackeray is not that “friendly”. Therefore, Thackeray’s male chauvinism can be revealed through analyzing his depiction of women images, plot and the arrangement of different endings of the two women images. At last, this thesis intends to illustrate that the molding of the two women images in Vanity Fair has close connection with Thackeray’s male chauvinism.
