A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Versions of The Great Gatsby from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory

School of International Studies Major: English Grade: 2017 Instructor: Liu Chang
Abstract: The Great Gatsby is the masterpiece of American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. It is one of the greatest English novels of the 20th century. In China, although there are many versions of The Great Gatsby, the quality of some of them can not reproduce the classic level of the original. This paper will use the theory of Functional Equivalence Theory to make a comparative analysis from the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, so as to complete the comparison and analysis of Wu ningkun's translation and Yao Naiqiang's translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. Through comparative analysis, the author finds that the quality of Yao Naiqiang's translation is higher, which can better convey the literary and cultural values behind the text.
