从伯克认同理论视角浅析米歇尔·奥巴马2016 DNC演讲

A Brief Analysis of 2016 DNC Speech of Michelle Obama from Burke’s Identification Theory

[Abstract] As public speech develops progressively, rhetoric takes up a more and more important position in Western political field. The appropriate employment of rhetorical devices toa large degree influences the impact of the speech. It is universally known that public speaking is a key measure for American presidential campaign.Hence, nominees will deliver excellent speeches to win votes in different parts.Meanwhile, their supporters also deliver speeches to win votes for the nominees, which is a key part that should not be overlooked. Michelle Obama, as a great lady behind a successful man,has contributed a lot to Obama’s presidential election, and also helped Hillarys’ in 2016 although the latter in the end lost the election. Years later, this stirring speech is still widely acclaimed. What is the appeal behind the speech?Hence, the thesis, based on Burke’s identification theory, attempts to explore the factors that make the 2016 DNC speech of Michelle Obama a great success. It is found that focusing on the rhetorical strategies of seeking identification that contributes to wielding the rhetorical power in the speech. She resorts to identification by sympathy to arouse the emotional resonance from one key point:the vision for children, identification by inaccuracy to transfer her intentions to the public and induce them to stand by her side unconsciously and identification by antithesis to get more support from the audience by implicitly portraying Donald Trump as a selfish and irresponsible person. Michelle manages to manipulate kinds of strategies to seek identification from different audience. Thus, the highly anticipated speech is greeted with rousing applause from the delegates.
