A Pragmatic Study of English Euphemism in The Desperate Housewives

Abstract

Euphemism, a common linguistic phenomenon, act a pivotal part  in interpersonal relationship. So it is also regarded as “lube ” in human communication. Linguistic researchers have studied it from different aspects. Great  achievements have been made. However, the earlier studies mostly focus on dictionary compiling rhetoric, semantics and syntactic. With the development of our society, people have an increasing need in language expression, so the use to euphemism is not only limited in words and sentences, but the practical usage. The significance of this thesis is that it analyzes English euphemism from pragmatic context, taking the context of situation and the context of culture as the basis, selecting some representative dialogues of Desperate Housewives as analyzing objects, to preceding a systematical analysis; the practical significance is that the analyzing conclusion can be of reference for foreign language learners.
