Application of Euphemism in Business English Letters

Abstract

With the growing trade between China and other foreign countries in the world, English as a world language is essential in the trade activities between China and other countries. In international trade activities, in order to make both sides deal more harmoniously and to communicate more smooth. And business traders in business activities are often with the help of polite euphemism. By applying euphemism, the willingness of each side can be expressed in an implicit way. Greek can be seen as the birthplace of euphemism, the “eu” of which refers to “good” while the “pheme” refers to “utterance”, so literally means to speak in a polite way. Euphemism is an important feature of business letters, it plays a pro heavy significance for international business success.
This paper applies the specific analysis of euphemism in Business English correspondence from two aspects: syntax and morphology, from the cooperation principle, politeness principle, principle of relevance, principle of euphemism on the basis of exchanges between the two sides of business letters to analyze and research the phenomenon of euphemism. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the application of euphemism in business correspondence, so that business people can avoid the use of wrong euphemisms in the communication of business letters, and create a good business image of Chinese companies.
This paper is divided into 5 chapters.
The first chapter introduces the background, purpose and significance of the research, and emphasizes the importance of euphemism in business correspondence. At the same time, it reviews the research status and research achievements of Chinese and foreign scholars on the application of euphemism, business English and Euphemism in business letters.
The second chapter is the theoretical framework of this paper. It introduces the basic concepts of business English letters and euphemisms, as well as the theoretical support of the research.
The third chapter is the main part of this paper. Through case studies of business English letters, the application of euphemism in Business English letters is analyzed in terms of lexical and grammatical aspects. And the application strategies of euphemism in business letter writing are also discussed.
The fourth chapter, through the analysis of the third chapter, gives strategies for the analysis of euphemism in business correspondence, and it can apply these strategies simply and clearly, and faithfully apply euphemisms to business correspondence correctly.
By analyzing the use of euphemism in Business English correspondence, this paper demonstrates the important role of euphemism in appropriateness in international business activities. Euphemism not only makes the expression of business English right, but also creates a good atmosphere.
